Meet Harry, who we have had the privilege to work with in partnership with Legs 4 Africa

At 32 years of age, Harry found his life profoundly altered. An unyielding battle with diabetes led to a leg amputation, creating a stark shift in his lifestyle and mobility. His vibrant social life and interactions with friends seemed to be dwindling away, constrained by his physical circumstances.

However, the course of Harry’s life took a turn when he received a prosthetic leg. This device was more than just a physical aide, it was an instrument of freedom. With his new prosthetic leg, Harry regained his mobility and reconnected with his social circle. His daily life, which once seemed hampered by his condition, was restored to its previous vibrancy.

When asked about his source of happiness, Harry’s reply is poignant and simple, “the gift of life makes me happy”. This reflects his deep appreciation of life, magnified after overcoming the significant hurdle of amputation.

Harry’s story stands as a beacon of resilience and positivity. It underscores the transformative power of prosthetics, showcasing their potential to bridge the gap between disability and normalcy. As we narrate his journey, we aim to inspire others and highlight the profound, life-altering impact of prosthetic technology.

Martyn will be taking part in the 21k Beast run for Thames Hospice

Martyn will be taking part in the 21k Beast run for Thames Hospice on August 13th 2023.

Hear from Martyn and why he has chosen this charity.

”Thames Hospice provided care for my Mum in the last days of her life, they offered support to the family and many other families alike.

They offer Hospice care for people aged 16 and over in Berkshire and South Buckinghamshire, offering palliative and end-of-life care.”

At our Leicester Centre, we have been working with a local Education and Business Company, promoting the professions we offer within our services from a careers perspective for their World of Work Healthcare days. Three of our team members supported a recent speed networking event for those students who are considering careers in healthcare.

We found it so rewarding to share our expertise with the next generation, inspiring them to start a career within our industry and perhaps even within our team.

The Bits Missing swim team raise over £10K !!

After five years of planning the Bits Missing team crossed the north channel on the 20th June 2022 in an amazing time off 15 hrs 8 mins and 13 seconds. The conditions on the day were perfect with no wind and despite the jellyfish each swimmer gave their all and pushed through.

Swimmer Jonty Warneken commented “I felt a huge amount of pride in what we had achieved, relief that it was over after 5 years in the planning. But mostly pride at what a group of amputees can achieve even having never met before”

The team who were supported by Gavin Campbell, our prosthetic manager in Belfast raised money for various charities such as the Teenage Cancer Trust. Level Water and OpenCountry with a current combined total of £10,116 raised.

Swimmer Mary Clewlow commented “ It was an unbelievable feeling to think we had smashed out a world’s first! I was exhausted too but so proud of our team! I did think back to the day I lost my left leg when I was diagnosed with bone cancer and I thought wow whoever thought back then I would be doing this challenge forty years later”

World Diabetes Day 2021

This Sunday, November 14th is World Diabetes Day. An important day in raising awareness of diabetes, conditions that affect people with diabetes, and how to support those affected in managing conditions in order to live long and happy lives.

Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial to prevent long-term health complications. Did you know worldwide, every 30 s, a limb is lost to diabetes? Therefore, it is crucial that we share information and talk about diabetes and what early indications to look out for.

What is diabetes?

There are different types of diabetes – Type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes. Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs when the level of glucose in the blood is too high. Hyperglycaemia is a common effect of uncontrolled diabetes and can lead to serious health problems if left untreated.

What are common symptoms of diabetes?

Some of the early symptoms to keep an eye out for are:
Thirst
Extreme fatigue
Blurred vision
Slowly healing cuts or wounds
Unexplained weight loss
Frequent urination

What do I do if I think I have diabetes?

If you are recognising any of the above symptoms, or someone you know is worried they may be diabetic, it is essential that any concerns are raised with a healthcare professional straight away. Your GP will be able to advise you on medicine, as well as diet and exercise, in order to keep up a healthy lifestyle.

If you have been diagnosed with diabetes, it is very important that you check your feet regularly. You will need to look out for redness, bruising, ulcers, and blisters. It is common to experience less feeling in your feet, meaning that you are more prone to injury and may not realise when you have hurt yourself, so please take the time to check!
